Base Camp- Creating Awareness for The Journey Ahead

Updated: Feb 24, 2021

Have you ever gone on a journey? Have you ever set out for adventure? Exploration? Ventured to a new land? Or tried something brand new? If you have how did you start? Chances are you spent a great deal of time planning. Where you would go, how you would get there? How much it would cost? How long you would stay? What you would want to see? What experiences you would want to have? You get the idea. Well, life is one of the most awesome adventures you will experience, yet as professionals, as we may not have spent a lot of time planning, or even knowing what to plan for. Or maybe, if you are anything like myself, you were never taught to plan, just worked really hard and keep moving forward.

Today I want to talk about the importance of creating “A Base Camp.” You might be asking, what is a Base Camp? According to Oxford’s Dictionary, a Base Camp is “a camp where people start their journey when climbing high mountains.” And because my goal is all about helping you Move Your Mountains, establishing a base camp is key to your journey and your success. Base Camp is about setting up and creating a mindset, becoming self-aware, and planning before you ever pick up and go.

You can’t move your mountains if you don’t know what mountains you need to move. Many of us want better jobs, more money, flexibility, and time for our families, a more equitable and fairer workplace, but we stay, we stay in jobs that we are not fundamentally aligned to. If you have you ever felt stuck? Stuck in life, in your work, and stuck inside yourself? You will need to tap into what is holding you back? What limiting beliefs are you believing about ourselves that just aren't true?

Here is the best part, you have the power inside of yourself and DON’T HAVE TO STAY STUCK! YOU DON’T HAVE TO SETTLE! This is great news! We have more power than we think or have allowed ourselves to believe we have. Base camp is the preparation for the journey of moving your mountains.

There are three steps to take when creating your “Base Camp”

Step 1: Spend Time with your Thoughts

You need to spend time with your thoughts, you need to get clear about your beliefs, and you need to define and understand your personal core values. A way to do this is by asking yourself a few questions and push yourself to think outside of the box.

Ask Yourself?

1. What do I want to experience that is different from what I have already experienced?

2. How do I want to spend my time?

3. What goals would do I want to achieve?

Step 2: Create and Design Your Day

Create and design your day. You can have a lot of fun here and I challenge you to get specific. What would your life look like if you took the time to design your life down to each detail? What time do you wake up? what are you wearing? Who do you work with? What problems you are solving? What kind of work are you doing? If you want to work out before you start work, put that into the plan. If you want to work from home, put that in the plan. Healthy eating, sure why not, put that in the plan. Your day has 24 glorious hours, you have the power to decide how those hours are used, and what those hours are spent on.

Step 3: Build Your Habits

Don’t just do this exercise once and feel like you got it. No one ever got healthy in one day after eating cheeseburgers for 10 years. It takes time, and developing your plan will evolve, and change over time. What you are doing is building Awareness, you are creating your mindset. You are getting off autopilot, and being mindful about your life, and you are taking ownership to move your mountains.

I’ll say it again Oxford’s Dictionary defines a Base Camp as “a camp where people start their journey when climbing high mountains.” If you want to move your mountains, start At Base Camp.
